Myers-Briggs type identifier (MBTI) executive TEAM DEVELOPMENT

Over the past decade, ExecutivEdge consultants have successfully facilitated hundreds of MBTI team development offsites and sessions.  We have worked with Boards of Directors at Fortune 500 firms, HR teams, and senior executive staffs, as well as mid-level management teams.  We have designed and delivered sessions for teams and work groups in disparate functions from engineering, product development and marketing to human resources, finance and legal. We also use a variety of other instruments such as DISC, Birkman or StrengthFinder, to name a few.

At ExecutivEdge we typically strive to explicitly integrate a focus on "soft" teaming skills with "hard" business issues, using the language and insights of the MBTI to improve a team's ability to solve problems, manage conflict, make decisions, communicate and influence others in the organization or build out a strategic plan. Our offsites vary from several hours to several days and are customized, typically through close collaboration with the team leader and HR. Whenever possible, the process begins with an assessment of a representative sampling of team members of what the team wishes to accomplish through an offsite and an identification of where the team is working effectively and where it is not.

A typical approach to MBTI team building includes several phases:

Needs Assessment:

  • Initial meeting with executive and/or HR to determine outcomes
  • Development of questions for assessment
  • 30-45 minute phone interviews with participants and Summary Report
  • Online administration of MBTI Individual Reports
  • Optional individual debriefing with participants to discuss their profile
  • Team Profile generated to assist group with problem solving and decision making implications

Offsite Planning and Preparation:

  • Co-create agenda and activities with key executives and/or HR
  • Identify business issues to discuss at offsite
  • Determine appropriate balance of work on vision, purpose, values and team operating principles
  • Agree on role of "team building" activities at offsite and design, if needed an experiential activity

Offsite Facilitation:

  • Myers-Briggs Team Profile
  • Team Assessment data
  • Stop-Start-Continue Team Contract
  • Team building Activity (The Maze, Colour Blind, Diversity, etc.)
  • Identification of key priorities and alignment around issues
  • Agreement on practical Action Plans and Next Steps
  • Individual contracts to promote accountability

Follow-Up:

  • Debriefing session with executive and/or HR
  • Optional individual follow-up sessions with individual participants
  • Optional individual executive coaching with team leader

Customized Tools:

  • Team Performance Survey
  • Managerial Courage Index
  • Am I A Team Player Checklist

MBTI:

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) instrument and the dozens of expert resources that have been designed to enhance its effectiveness offer a practical yet powerful set of tools for lifelong growth and development. After more than 50 years, the MBTI instrument continues to be the most trusted and widely used assessment in the world for understanding individual differences and uncovering new ways to work and interact with others. More than 2 million assessments have been administered to individuals-including employees of many Fortune 500 companies-annually in the United States alone. The MBTI family of tools reaches across the globe in 16 languages to help improve individual and team performance, nurture and retain top talent, develop leadership at every level of an organization, reduce workplace conflict, and explore the world of work, beginning with the MBTI Form M instrument, which identifies the four basic type preferences, or Form Q, which provides a more richly textured picture of type and behavior.
